"Clueless", loosely based on Jane Austen's "Emma", is the film that made Alicia Silverstone an A-list international star. It is intelligently written & directed by Amy Heckerling who also directed the 80's classic "Fast Times At Ridgemont High"."Clueless" is a satire about Beverly Hills High School students growing up in the 90's. It was this film that sparked new life into the teen movie genre & even resulted in a popular TV series. This charming, good-natured teen comedy was an unexpected smash hit worldwide & was famous for introducing a whole new style of teen vernacular. "Clueless" was made on a budget of $20 million and grossed over $56 million at the U.S. box office. Silverstone is delightful in her role as the rich, gorgeous & very popular Cher. Her preoccupation with shopping, cell phones, fancy cars & makeovers, changes as her character matures & becomes more aware of the importance of caring for others. Dan Hedaya is truly hilarious as Silverstone's overprotective father & has some of the films best lines. He says to one of her boyfriends just before he takes her out "If anything happens to her, I got a .45 & a shovel. I don't think you'll be missed." All the young cast give credible performances & some have gone on to bigger & better roles. Breckin Meyer is good in support as the likeable skateboard loser. He has since gone on to a major starring role in the smash hit "Road Trip". Paul Ruud is enjoyable as Silverstone's stepbrother & has recently played the male lead in "The Object of My Affection" alongside "Friends" star Jennifer Anniston. Silverstone has of course become a mega-star with roles in "Batman & Robin" & the romantic comedy "Blast From The Past". Alicia's performance in "Clueless" won her numerous awards including, "Funniest Actress In A Motion Picture" (American Comedy Awards), "Favorite Female Newcomer" (Blockbuster Entertainment Awards), "Best Breakthrough Performer" (National Board Of Review) and finally a double win at the MTV Movie Awards for "Best Female Performance & Most Desirable Female". "Clueless" is a likeable film because of its charm, wit & good-natured characters. If you haven't seen it, go out & rent it tonight, you won't be disappointed. If you have seen it, then go out & rent it again anyway, it's worth at least a second viewing.
