"Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan Lord of the Apes" is an epic film. With a running time of nearly 2 & 1/2 hours, the gripping story is allowed to unfold, for the first-time ever, in a way that it was destined to do so. With its well develop characterisations and imaginative film making it has possibly become the definitive adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs' novel. Christopher Lambert, in his first Hollywood film, puts in arguably his finest performance as the legendary jungle man. Andie MacDowell (in her first film role) is good as Jane but surprisingly actress Glenn Close dubbed her voice. "Greystoke" was nominated for 3 Academy Awards including, Best Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium, Best Make-up and Best Supporting Actor (Ralph Richardson). What "Greystoke" lacks in vine swinging, matinee-style adventure, it more than makes up for with serious involving drama. The film takes a realistic look at the inner workings of this fascinating character that was raised by apes, taken to civilisation and then returned back to the jungle. Beautifully filmed on locations in England, Cameron and Scotland, "Greystoke" is a grand entry in the long-running Tarzan saga.
