Mean Machine: Tony's Comments
In the tradition of "Escape To Victory" & "The Longest Yard" comes the latest sporting extravaganza "Mean Machine," starring "Soccer's Hardman" Vinnie Jones. Fresh from his success with small roles in "Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels", "Gone In Sixty Seconds", "Snatch" & "Swordfish" it was inevitable that Vinnie Jones would star in a big screen film that focuses on his former profession, soccer. Set in an English prison, Vinnie plays a disgraced (match-fixing & drunken assault) ex-English international football star that is given the opportunity to train his fellow inmates for a soccer match against the prison guards. Vinnie gives an admirable performance in his first starring role and I am sure more films will follow. "Mean Machine" gets off to a good start, gets a little plot heavy in the middle and then continues to gain strength as it goes along, with a few action set-pieces, some comedic training sequences and there is even time for Vinnie to demonstrate his world-renowned ball skills.  The film finishes on a high with an exciting soccer match that is not totally predictable and will certainly please soccer fans. If you like your sports films with laughs and action then "Mean Machine" is your ticket to a good time.
