In "Never Been Kissed" Drew Barrymore plays Josie Geller, a 25 year old Chicago Newspaper editor who has been given an assignment to write a special report on the youth of today. As research for her assignment she is required by her boss to re-enter high school & enrole as a new student.
Going back to school to complete her assignment is something that Drew's character finds rather painful, as she was never popular in her school years & always had trouble fitting in with the so-called "in-crowd". Her return to school starts out as a disaster. She arrives on her first day inappropriately dressed, in white jeans & fluffy feather boa. She is made fun of by her fellow students & her first day becomes the nightmare she feared, a complete re-run of her former school days.
She is constantly shunned by her fellow students until her way-out brother Bob (David Arquette) decides to enrole at the school in order to help her overcome her insecurities & boost her popularity with her peers. Drew also attracts the attention of English teacher Sam Coulson (Michael Vartan). Will they fall in love? Is he her prince charming? Will Drew eventually be kissed? Well you'll just have to watch it to find out.
"Never Been Kissed" is a fun, romantic teen comedy. It tries hard to make us relate with a character who has trouble being accepted in an environment, she is re-discovering for a 2nd time, her high school years. Drew Barrymore makes the most of the material she has to work with. She gives a good-hearted performance, her likeability & charm keep the film afloat.
