George Clooney heads an ensemble cast in "Ocean's Eleven", a remake of the 1960 Rat Pack heist flick of the same name. Just released from prison, gangster Danny Ocean (George Clooney) rounds up a gang of ten misfits to help him rob three of Las Vegas' biggest casino's, The Mirage, The Bellagio & The MGM Grand. The robbery is planned to take place during a scheduled boxing match at The MGM Grand. At some stage during the fight the intricate plan includes a total blackout of Las Vegas that will allow the thieves to get past the hi-tech security system that surrounds the safe containing a kitty of more than $150 million dollars. To add to the fun Julia Roberts plays Tess Ocean, Danny Ocean's ex-wife, who is now dating casino owner Terrence Benedict played convincingly by Andy Garcia.
"Ocean's Eleven contains many stylishly conceived sequences, the recruitment of the team members, the execution of the robbery, including a couple of bonus twists in the finale. The film does all of this tongue in-cheek, with occasional comedic flair. A good example being Elliott Gould's character trying to convince Clooney & Pitt not to go ahead with the heist by telling them about previous failed attempts (shown in comic flashbacks) to rob Las Vegas casinos. Also, look out for old-timer Carl Reiner (Gidget Goes Hawaiian) who almost steals the show with a few interesting one-liners.
One of the casinos robbed in the original "Ocean's Eleven" was The Desert Inn. It is interesting to note that the hotel was demolished in 2001 & its destruction is featured in this new movie. Andy Garcia, with Julia Roberts by his side, is shown pushing the detonator switch that sets off the explosion & brings the hotel crumbling to the ground.
Look out for a number of cameo appearances, including Henry Silva & Angie Dickinson (spectators in the boxing ring) from the original Ocean's Eleven & Dawson's Creek star Joshua Jackson along with other teen stars in the celebrity card game sequence.
"Ocean's Eleven" is a stylish thriller competently directed by Academy Award winner Steven Soderbergh (Traffic). George Clooney's Danny Ocean is not unlike Jack Foley, the character he portrayed in the critically acclaimed "Out Of Sight" (1998), also directed by Steven Soderbergh. In fact "Ocean's Eleven could all most be considered a sequel to "Out Of Sight". At the end of "Out of Sight" George Clooney is being transported to prison. At the beginning of "Ocean's Eleven" he is being released from prison.
Although many of the actors took pay cuts just for the privilege of appearing in "Ocean's Eleven" the film was still made on a big budget costing $85 million dollars to produce. In the US it has already made over $150 million dollars & ironically, this is approximately the same amount that the Eleven thieves took from the Las Vegas casino during the heist.
"Ocean's Eleven" oozes coolness just like the outfits worn by the cast. If you like heist films they don't come much better than this. This is old-style Hollywood entertainment at its best. This new up-tempo high-tech version of "Ocean's Eleven" would even make the original Rat Packers (Dean, Frank, Sammy & the guys) proud.
