On its initial release "The Phantom" was considered somewhat of a failure. The film had a budget of $45 million but only managed to gross about $17 million in the US. Although bagged by some critic & considered a commercial failure, "The Phantom" is nevertheless an enjoyable & entertaining live-action comic book adventure.

Billy Zane is in fine form as Kit Walker (The Phantom), the comic book hero who rides a white stallion & protects the people on his island from ruthless pirates & villains. In this feature "The Phantom" travels to New York to prevent super villian, Xander Drax (Treat Williams) from obtaining 3 magical skulls that will give him the power to rule the world.

"The Phantom" is action-packed & Indiana Jones style stunts feature strongly in this comic book adventure. Look out for future Mrs. Michael Douglas, Catherine Zeta-Jones in a small but memorable role as a villainess. Although not in the same class as "Superman" or "Batman" fans of live-action super hero movies will not be disappointed with this one.
