The Purple Mask: Tony's Comments
In the tradition of "Zorro" & "The Scarlet Pimpernel" comes "The Purple Mask" a good old-fashioned adventure yarn starring 1950's teen idol Tony Curtis at his youthful best. "The Purple Mask" was directed by H. Bruce Humberstone who would later go on to make three Gordon Scott Tarzan adventures including, "Tarzan And the Lost Safari" (1957), "Tarzan's Fight For Life" (1958) and "Tarzan And The Trappers" (1958), for which he was uncredited. "The Purple Mask" is set in France during the early 1800's. The revolution is over and a mysterious stranger disguised with a purple mask roams the countryside rescuing noblemen and damsels in distress. He kidnaps Napoleon's officials and holds them for ransom. Like Robin Hood he robs the rich and gives to the poor. Look out for Angela Landsbury (TV's Murder She Wrote) as Madame Valentine and Gene Barry (TV's Bat Masterson) as Capt. Charles Laverne in supporting roles. "The Purple Mask" is a great Saturday afternoon swashbuckler and with Tony Curtis in the lead role it has maintained its sense of fun and charm.
