"The Silencers" is the first & possibly the best of a series of 4 films made in the 1960's to cash in on the popular James Bond phenomenon. Legendary crooner Dean Martin stars as the slick, super-cool, secret agent Matt Helm. Dean Martin doesn't take the role seriously & plays it strictly tongue-in-cheek, with a drink in one hand & a beautiful girl in the other.
Dean Martin is excellent as the retired secret agent who is now posing as a freelance photographer. He is slick, suave, tough when need be, but above all, a sophisticated ladies man. He hangs around in his bachelor pad on a rotating circular bed that slides him across the room, if necessary, & tips him into a bathtub that is big enough to pass as an indoor swimming pool. His secretary is often waiting in the tub for him.

In this first film, Matt Helm is pulled out of retirement & sent on a mission to save the world from a mad scientist intent on using nuclear weapons in his take over bid. Stella Stevens is excellent as Matt Helm's love interest & comedic sidekick. Like all good secret agent films "The Silencers" is jam-packed with inventive gadgets. The most memorable being, the sports coat with the explosive buttons, the camera with the firing knives & who can forget the gun that could shoot backwards.

"The Silencers" features an original music score by Elmer Bernstein & a number of Dean Martin bit-songs, which add to the fun & help create atmosphere. "The Silencers" was so popular that 3 sequels followed "Muderers' Row" (1966), "The Ambushers" (1967) & "The Wrecking Crew" (1969).

"The Silencers" is an ultra-cool spy spoof & is a classic in the secret agent genre. Dean Martin is having the time of his life in the role of super spy Matt Helm & it shows. Highly recommended for lovers of spy movies & of course Dean Martin fans.
